Shelter Island is the island time forgot. Nestled between the protective arms of the North and South Forks, surrounded by calm waters, and accessible only by ferry, Shelter Island looks like a set piece from a golden age that's come to life.

The Heights, a fantasia of Victoriana, is just up from the North Ferry dock. The homes of Shelter Island, however, express many styles - from Southern colonials to Norman Jaffe modern and antique cottages.

As remarkable as the homes is the abundance of untouched land. In fact, one-third of the island is preserved, including the 2100 acre Mashomack Preserve. However, if you want a people scene, sail or drive to Andre Balaz's Sunset Beach restaurant, where the view rivals the food and celebrity star power. For music cognoscenti, there are stirring concerts by the young geniuses at Itzhak Perlman's Crescent Beach summer music program.

Top beaches, golf courses, yacht clubs, restaurants, and hotel accommodations are to be expected here. What is amazing is how Shelter Island makes you feel. Try describing the flight of an osprey as it alights from its aerie and swoops out to sea? Sometimes you just have to be there.
